Hot subdwarf stars in close-up view*

The origin of hot subdwarf B stars (sdBs) is still unclear. About half of the known sdBs are in close binary systems for which common envelope ejection is the most likely formation channel. Little is known about this dynamic phase of binary evolution. Since most of the known sdB systems are single-lined spectroscopic binaries, it is difficult to derive masses and unravel the companions’ nature,...

Stellar Rotation from GAIA Spectra

Abstract. Stellar rotation influences our understanding of stellar structure and evolution, binary systems, clusters etc. and therefore the benefits of a large and highly accurate database on stellar rotation, obtained by GAIA, will be manifold. To study the prospects of GAIA measurement of projected rotational velocities vrot sin i, we use synthetic stellar spectra to simulate the determinatio...

Single and Composite Hot Subdwarf Stars in the Light of 2mass Photometry

Abstract. Utilizing the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) All-Sky Data Release Catalog, we have retrieved useful near-IR J , H , and KS magnitudes for more than 800 hot subdwarfs (sdO and sdB stars) drawn from the Catalogue of Spectroscopically Identified Hot Subdwarfs (Kilkenny, Heber, & Drilling 1988, 1992). This sample size greatly exceeds previous studies of hot subdwarfs. We find that, of ...

Line-driven winds, ionizing fluxes and UV-spectra of hot stars at extremely low metallicity. I. Very massive O-stars

Wind models of very massive stars with metallicities in a range from 10−4 to 1.0 solar are calculated using a new treatment of radiation driven winds with depth dependent radiative force multipliers and a comprehensive list of more than two million of spectral lines in NLTE. The models are tested by a comparison with observed stellar wind properties of O stars in the Galaxy and the SMC. Satisfy...

Information recovery from overlapping GAIA spectra

The RVS instrument aboard GAIA is a slitless spectrograph, so some spectral tracing overlap is inevitable. We show that this background can be accurately modeled and subtracted. Radial velocity accuracy is not degraded significantly unless the star density is higher than the value typical for the Galactic plane.
